Chowing 305-style: If you’re in Miami and hanging with Charles Barkley…

Posted on 09:46 by RAJA BABU

By Fernie Ruano Jr.

Fresh off a 10-for-28 shooting spree from the floor in another Lakers loss Wednesday night, Kobe Bryant continues to take shots at a ridiculous pace and is determined to not only break the internet before Christmas, but make Kim Kardashian blush http://thegrio.com/2014/11/12/kim-kardashian-butt/. That’s if the Black Mamba doesn’t quit in the middle of the third quarter against the San Antonio Spurs, tomorrow night.

But besides tanking, which is defined as losing intentionally or not competing, the Lakers have already reached one of their goals for the 2014-15 NBA season: win a game. And that means TNT’s Inside the NBA co-host and ex-short shorts baller Charles Barkley, who drinks diet milkshakes and promised not to eat until the Lakers won a game, can chow down again.

And wouldn’t you know it. TNT is televising Clippers-Heat at the AmericanAirlines Arena, Thursday, November 20 and since Sir Charles is known to enjoy a hearty meal once in a while and doesn’t have to sleep on Dan Le Batard’s couch whenever he’s in the 305 because he’s $$$$, we had a few restaurant suggestions for the “Round Mound of Rebound”.

Now, all we need is for TNT to send Barkley to Miami as part of the crew broadcasting the game. And we can definitely use his $$$$$$ for more than just eating churros.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW5I-fFa4gY

PRIME 112: We know Charles LOVES this place…..well, because we’ve seen him here. And that in itself excuses him from being called a “big dummy” ever again. Can you blame him? It’s been almost 11 years since Mr. Chefetz opened the modern steakhouse which keeps ballers, celebs, politicians and hungry and horny females going back for awesome dry-aged beef, Lobster Mac and Cheese and Kobe – KOBE! – Beef Sliders!  And if you see a woman or man you really like, invite him/her to the bar for a few drinks. Just a few$$$$$.... (112 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139, 305-532-8112http://mylesrestaurantgroup.com/?page_id=51)

JOE’S STONE CRAB: This restaurant is really old and since we know Sir Charles has a soft spot for snowbirds, he should have no trouble fitting in – especially when he sees the menu, which he probably won’t need because he will likely fall in love with the stone crab claws and mustard sauce before they get to his table, if he doesn’t order the delicious fried chicken, instead. It’s loud and crowded, so chances are Charles might stick out in the buzzy crowd. But that’s no reason for him to bypass a huge piece of Key Lime pie, which he probably won’t. (11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139, 305-673-0365, http://www.joesstonecrab.com/)

PUERTA SAGUAS: How can you possibly come to Miami and not stuff your face with authentic Cuban food? There’s nothing fancy about this no-frills, tight space in the middle of ritzy South Beach, but what Barkley will find are Cuban sandwiches so well-pressed the Swiss cheese drips over the fresh Cuban bread, perfectly-seasoned ropa vieja (shredded beef) and juicy lechon (pork) with black beans and white rice. And it’s so economical Sir Charles might even want to pick up the tab for everybody sitting along the tiny counter. ( 700 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139, 305-673-1115, http://www.zagat.com/r/puerto-sagua-restaurant-miami-beach)

NFL PLAYOFF PICTURE: Still a bit foggy, but clearing up….

Posted on 12:14 by RAJA BABU

By Fernie Ruano Jr.

Week 10 of our favorite professional football league provided us with more ammunition that it’s quite alright to pack it in early on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights or watch your favorite sitcom since 21 of 31 prime-time games this season have been decided by 14 points or more, including Philadelphia’s 45-21 thumping of Carolina on Monday and Green Bay's 55-14 wiping of Chicago on Sunday. And we’re past the midway point of the season so it should be clear to you by now that if it’s dark outside and there’s an NFL game on the schedule you should skip it and make love to your wife or something.

SKIP PRIME-TIME FOOTBALL, unless you’re in the mood to watch a player drop dead on the field, the 7-year-old sitting next to you on the couch is begging you or you’ve been sleeping on the couch since May and haven’t spoken to your wife since Easter. But you’re probably such a big leatherhead you took in the low-profile Dolphins-Lions before spending the rest of the afternoon pounding brews in your backyard and cursing Matthew Stafford because you grew up in Miami and the last time your favorite professional football team played in a playoff game, you were learning how to ride a bike.

But hang on tight and don’t give up even though if feels you’ve been going around in circles for what seems like a decade because there are approximately 20 teams with a realistic chance of making the playoffs – 10 in the AFC and 10 in the NFC. New England, Denver and Indianapolis are locks, while the NFC is crazier than Russell Wilson’s hair.

There’s seven weeks of regular-season football remaining and the Cleveland Browns have a CHANCE of winning the AFC North, the Arizona Cardinals can hear the burglars in their driveway, DeMarco Murray is tired and the Cowboys shouldn’t care, Andy Reid is carrying Alex Smith like a sack of toys over his shoulder, Marshawn Lynch is really mad and the Dolphins, Chargers, Bengals, Bills, 49ers, Saints and Falcons still have a shot of making the playoffs -at least, mathematically.

AFC -

NO WORRIES

New England (7-2), Denver (7-2), Indianapolis (6-3): Unless Tom Brady decides to move with Gisele to another country by the end of week, Peyton Manning trips in the kitchen over a box of his favorite pizza and Andrew Luck  wakes up Sunday morning and his right arm is on the floor, all three teams will be in the playoffs. The Pats have a two-game lead in the AFC East; however a loss at Indy Sunday night would drop them out of the top spot in the AFC. A Denver win and New England loss would give the Broncos the top spot in the AFC and drop the Patriots below the Colts - for this week, anyway.

HELP PLEASE

Cleveland (6-3), Kansas City (6-3), Cincinnati (5-3-1), Pittsburgh (6-4), Baltimore (6-4): There’s a really good chance three of the five teams make the playoffs, including the winner of the AFC North and the second wild-card team behind the Chiefs. The Chiefs have two games remaining against the Raiders (0-9), but still have to face the Seahawks, Chargers, Broncos, Cardinals and Steelers. Can K.C. win at least two of the three to get to 10-6? Kansas City visits Pittsburgh in the final week of the regular season. Playoffs? Playoffs?

OPEN THE DOOR

San Diego (5-4), Buffalo (5-4), Miami (5-4), Houston (4-5): Thursday night’s Bill-Dolphins tilt in Miami is essentially a playoff game, with the loser likely done. Miami has received two vicious body blows in recent weeks, with the most recent coming at Detroit on Sunday. And now must forward without star left tackle Branden Albert, lost for the year to a knee injury. Miami still has dates against the Ravens, Patriots and Broncos. Buffalo also suffered a devastating loss against the Chiefs last week, but matches up well against Miami and a win will put them back in the playoff chase. If Houston makes the playoffs, it will be on the right arm of Ryan Mallett. Good luck!

NFC –

WE’RE JUST CHILLIN

Arizona (8-1), Detroit (7-2), Philadelphia (7-2), Dallas (6-3), Seattle (6-3), Green Bay (6-3): Most of the resumes look great, but are these teams all a good fit? Questions abound… Can you really see Drew Stanton – DREW STANTON – PLAYING in the SUPER BOWL? How come the Lions don’t score a lot, even with arguably the best receiver ever on their side? Mark Sanchez? Seriously!! Will DeMarco Murray still be alive by mid-December? Is Marshawn Lynch about to get really mad? Is the Packers’ defense good enough to stop anybody when it really counts?

THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

San Francisco (5-4), New Orleans (4-5): New Orleans left the door open because they couldn’t stop the 49ers on a fourth-and-10 in OT. But does anybody really see the Falcons winning the NFC South? And San Francisco should still be taken very seriously, since the Cardinals still have two left against Seattle.

Latin Grammys: Are the Latin music industry’s shiniest awards stained forever?

Posted on 10:59 by RAJA BABU

By Fernie Ruano Jr.

Imagine if you’ve holed up every day for a year in a music studio and drained your savings account in hopes of getting noticed by the Latin Recording Academy and perhaps have your album nominated for a Latin Grammy award, but you get passed over in favor of “friends” of the academy; chances are you would not only feel a bit deflated, but be questioning the career  you’ve worked so hard to establish, especially if you’re not a member of the academy and therefore have no financial obligations with the organization.
And little to no chance of being nominated or - much less - winning a Latin Grammy.
That’s the prevailing question – and a legitimate one to ask and ponder – as Latin music promoters and publicists turn up their efforts in preparation for the 15th Latin Grammy Awards show, Thursday, November 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
What’s supposed to be a celebration of the industry’s best – from artist who compose and interpret traditional to contemporary music – has been turned into a platform for the $$$$ and influential inside of the Latin Recording Academy, a “non-profit organization” made up of artists, musicians and other recording professionals and technicians. If you’re part of the “Buddy System”, which in part means you’re in bed with promoters and publicists, or what’s left of them, you’re in. It’s sad, but true.
How else to explain the inclusion of several Miami-based artists like Aymee Nuviola, in the “Best Salsa Album” category for “First Class to Havana”, her most recent album and one she’s been promoting relentlessly in recent weeks, including at a Celia Cruz-tribute concert held in Miami, and Palo, nominated in the “Best Contemporary Tropical Album” for “Palo! Live”, a live recording recently featured in a “Miami-sound” documentary.  And while there’s nothing wrong with their efforts, they don’t belong in the same category with Carlos Vives (“Mas+Corazon Profundo”) and Prince Royce (“Soy El Mismo”). And does Nuviola really belong in the same category, much less in the same row of seats, with Anthony?
Why is Rey Ruiz, a mid-90's exponent of "Salsa romantica" and one of the truly good people in the business, now coming out of nowhere to promote "Regalo", a single which he "hopes to turn into an album." ? Where is Romeo Santos? Alejandro Fernandez? Gilberto Santa Rosa? My guess is their publicity efforts and contributions fell short of the standards upheld by the Latin Recording Academy or perhaps they figured one last push would score with the Latin Recording Academy; At least, this year anyway.
But in all probability, I will be tuned in a week from now because I’m still very passionate about Latin music and have been associated with the industry for 15 years; it’s like the phone number stored in your cellphone you haven’t deleted yet, even though she told you to never call her again. You can’t shake her and believe time will soften all wounds. I feel the same way about the Latin music industry.
I’m often asked why is it the Latin music industry continues to struggle in developing new artists and with it suffers from its inability give the industry a fresh face to be excited about? Well, besides stagnant record sales, which are routinely linked to pirating of music, and the inability of A&R’s at any of the mainstay record labels to discover new talent, the industry as a whole has itself to blame.
And the Latin Grammys are just another hole in the ditch.
The 15th Latin Grammy Awards will be presented on November 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The telecast will begin at 8 p.m. on Univision. For a complete list of nominees visit www.latingrammy.com.
