You’re in the driveway and the last thing on your mind is going out for a run along the water or at your favorite park because you just ate 11 pounds of fricase de pollo y platanitos maduros from El Palacios de los Jugos and the only thing you’re running to is the nearest bathroom in your house, or the remote control you swear you left on top of the kitchen counter this morning. But you take a look through your open-bedroom window and you’re reminded that its 70-degrees outside with a slight breeze, your best friend is probably rushing home to start the fireplace because she lives in Alaska, you’re walking a wedding next month and you live in Miami.
Now, take a few seconds and say that out loud while you run around your patio in your Victoria Secret’s G-string and tee, or boxer shorts if you’re a dude: “I LIVE IN MIAMI, BITCH!”
Well, then… And Miami is just dripping with places where you will not only soak in the great outdoors, but work off that humongous piece of lechon you eat for dinner while you’re at it. So, get out of bed, pull up your spandex pants and lace up your sneakers. Bring your boyfriend, too.
South Pointe Park: Do you want go for a quiet and relaxing run at the southernmost tip of South Beach while delighting in the ships coming in and out of the Port of Miami and run by strollers, dogs and diners at nearby Smith & Wollensky? If so, you would think this is a runner’s paradise. The view is awesome and you can sit with your girlfriend – or boyfriend – on one of the handful of benches and kiss him/her until your little heart desires. But keep an eye on the parking meter after you park your car, because parking at SPP could cost you some $$$. (1 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, FL 33109, 305-673-7730) Baptist Hospital: Smack in the middle of Kendall, this walking/jogging path in front of the hospital has a laid back and relaxing feel to it, made even more carefree by the lake and ducks routinely on the premises. And if you just want to run and get away, no worries because there’s no attitude and stuffiness here. It’s kind of going for a walk or run with your closest family members and/or friends. (8900 N. Kendall Drive., Miami, FL, 33176, 786-596-1960)
Kennedy Park: Leave your worries on your doorstep if you’re concerned about not being able to keep up with the advanced runners. This beautiful park with picturesque ocean views and loaded with trees even has free equipment stations and soft pavement, which is cream on top if you want to take it easy on your knees. And have a snow cone from the ice cream truck vendor in the parking lot. My treat! (South Bayshore Drive & 22nd Ave., Miami, FL 33143, 305-575-5256) Miami Beach Boardwalk: Are you looking for a perfect view of the ocean while you run surrounded by white sand, locals and tourists? Well, take a run down the wooden boardwalk which stretches for approximately 2 miles and is littered with beautiful people, no matter the time of day. Forget finishing the boardwalk run because looking straight ahead could be your biggest challenge on the MBB. (Collins Ave., Between 21st and 46th)
Don Soffer Exercise Trail: If you don’t mind running or walking around a golf course and surrounded by really, really surgically- enhanced people out of the RHOM cast, teenagers on skates and retired firemen ogling 30ish secretaries and lawyers this is the perfect spot to work up a sweat. And this is my personal favorite since I used to live in Aventura and would jog here four times a week. But run, don’t flirt…not even with the ducks. PLEASE! (Across from Aventura Mall, 199th and Biscayne Blvd.)
