For those familiar with the chaotic and pulverizing stage presence of Marc Anthony, Latin music’s melodramatic tenor with 15 million records sold worldwide, his routine before taking the stage should come as no surprise. “(I drink) a beer and (smoke) a cigarette,” said the 46-year-old Anthony, during a sit-down Q/A at the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Conference in Miami, earlier this year. “It relaxes me; settles me (down).”
But there’s nothing peaceful - if not his soulful and piercing voice – about his fully-charged and emotional act, from the effervescent hops and kicks which cover the stage corner-t0-corner to the contorted facial expressions to the slashing over instrumental solos with elongated lyrics to controlling a crowd’s emotion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCckAR5xxe8Anthony, 46, coming off a second Latin American tour earlier this summer in support of 3.0, his most recent album which includes “Vivir Mi Vida”, an adoption of French/Arabic hit “C’est La Vie” is routinely backed by a full ensemble, including a horn section, timabales, tumbadora and bongo drums – all creating a seductive and riveting ambience to his performances.
It’s been over 20 years since Anthony, a then-long haired, skinny kid looking to find a way out of New York’s freestyle zest pool, boarded a plane for Los Angeles with a bag and a dream.
Melodramatic: Marc Anthony is highly-regarded for his energetic performances.
Today, Anthony, lauded as the undisputed salsa singer of this generation in part for his crossover success in the late-90’s and early-00’s, can take credit for infectious and timeless hits such as “Hasta Ayer”, “Te Conozco Bien” and “Tu Amor Me Hace Bien”, among countless others, while moving millions of people with his music.
Marc Anthony will perform October 3-4 at 8 p.m. at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami (601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33132, 786-777-1000, www.aaarena.com, www.ticketmaster.com )
