What lifetime 305er hasn’t had a slice of heaven, courtesy of cheesy-landmark Miami’s Best Pizza, the no-attitude, South Dixie Highway pizzeria just south of Sunset Place?
Well, start drinking… now!
Word has come down - via Miami Herald - that Miami’s Best Pizza is closing up shop after 44 years of hard-tossing dough, spreading cheese and tossing pepperoni with pure awesomeness.
I mean: What normal human being with just a dab of 305 in him/her hasn’t been to the carefree and homey spot with picnic tables and ceiling TVs after a UM game to have a slice of pizza and 12 rolls of garlic bread?
No way: Miami's Best Pizza is closing shop after 44 years.
“Both owners love (to work here). It’s their life and whatever decision they make is going to be best for them and the pizza shop,” said manager Nick Butler, son of co-owner Charles Butler.
The family business, which has been in the hands of Ray Papich and Charles Butler since the mid-90’s when former UM football player Al Papich handed down the pizzeria to his son, is likely turning out the lights for good in mid-November. Their lease ends in November.
The property’s landlord passed away a few years ago, however, according to Nick Butler the landlord’s family sent down word recently that they wanted to recent the space and asked if the pizzeria’s owners could match a standing offer.
Butler said a re-opening is doubtful considering the high cost of rent for a locale in the area, although he didn’t rule anything out.
The pizzeria’s owners have no celebration planned as of right now, but if you love Miami and awesome pizza you should definitely swing by Miami’s Best Pizza (1514 S. Dixie Highway, Coral Gables, 305-666-5931) before mid-November.
